Hendy was first diagnosed with hearing loss at the age of 19. Now in her 70s, she first learned about Australian Lions Hearing Dogs (ALHD) in 2016 through her involvement with Lions Clubs International and the help of a friend. However, due to personal circumstances, she decided to wait before applying for a Hearing Assistance Dog.

As a teenager, Hendy faced many challenges. “Moving into the workforce, I kept my hearing loss from friends, family, and colleagues,” she recalls. At the time, she associated hearing loss with older people and felt embarrassed about it. However, she has since come to appreciate the acceptance and support of the community.

After navigating the challenges of COVID-19 and the loss of her beloved husband, Hendy felt the time was right to continue her application for a Hearing Assistance Dog. On  the 13th of November in 2023, a gorgeous Labradoodle named Lizzie arrived at her doorstep, changing her life in ways she never imagined.

“My love for Lizzie is unconditional. She’s my shadow 24/7 and is so well-behaved when I’m shopping, in restaurants, or at cafes. Her coat helps people recognise my disability and understand my needs,” Hendy shares.

Lizzie’s loyalty and companionship have brought Hendy a renewed sense of security. “She
makes me feel safe in my own home, always on alert to any noises or activity in
our unit complex.”

An adventurer at heart, Hendy loves to travel, and Lizzie is always by her side.
Together, they have explored the East Coast and joined numerous walking clubs.
“As a hiker, Lizzie is my mascot and would have to be the most walked ALHD dog.
She is always with me,” Hendy proudly states.

Partnerships like Hendy and Lizzie’s embody the heart of ALHD’s mission. Their incredible
bond is made possible by the dedication of many individuals, and we thank
everyone involved in bringing them together
