Type 1 diabetes is thought to be caused by an autoimmune reaction, where the body attacks itself by mistake. This reaction destroys the cells in the pancreas that makes insulin, known as beta cells, and onset of this conditions typically appears in childhood or adolescence.
For Cheryl, it happened when she was at the early age of 3, and though she has since learned to be independent in spite of her condition, it has not been easy.
‘An Insight Into Her Journey’ is an article about how different, and even hard, life is for Cheryl and those with type 1 diabetes. It offers a different perspective into their lives and a newfound respect for people with T1D and their families, and the difficulties they have to navigate through on a daily basis.
